I don't believe in any particular religion. I don’t have religious customs, cannot say religion is part of my life. However, I had some opportunities to think about religion. For example, my high school was Buddhism school (I didn’t know until entrance ceremony though) and I visited some religious buildings and saw religious paintings. When I saw these things, I doubted and marveled that the reasons so many people attracted religions for long years. They spent a lot of time, money, manpower to make and protect religious things.
Although
I felt understood the reason many people fascinated religion when I read THE
INFORMATION written by James Gleick.
This
article is about information theory thought by Claude Shannon and there are two sentences I thought could connect with religion.
Frist,
“Some messages may be likelier than others,
and information implies surprise. Surprise is a way of talking about
probabilities.”
I
think the “surprise” is one of the reasons people appeal, because
religion tell us new information through some media. For example, sermon by
clergy, the Bible and a person who have faith in religion. These new
information make people surprise and impress, people believe in religion. In other
words, “surprise” lead to people’s faith.
Second,
“ Information
is closely associated with uncertainty.”
This
sentence also associates with religious. In religion, “uncertainty” is
important. This is because, religion is thought that if you believe any
particular religion, the God might relieve you”. The degree of ” believe” is
uncertain. That is why if you don’t relieve, the cause is the lack of your piety
not the God. In short, by the uncertain information is a reason religion last
for a long time.
That is why I think religion attracts people for many years.

This was a difficult chapter, but I think you point out two interesting points: surprise and uncertainty. I appreciate your comment on your own religious experience. One of my points about The Information is that as meaning is separated from raw information, there is a way in which lots of different meanings and beliefs can proliferate with no real authority to slow it down..
